Congress President

Professor Detlev Ganten, Chairman of the Board of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the largest university medical center in Europe with 15,000 employees, 3,500 beds and an annual budget of 1 billion euros. As a research scientist in the field of hypertension, Professor Ganten elucidated fundamental mechanisms in the development of high blood pressure. His area of research includes the hormonal regulation of blood pressure, especially the renin-angiotensin system and the molecular genetics of cardiovascular diseases. His scientific work includes numerous publications and books. He is Editor of the Journal of Molecular Medicine (JMM) and a member of the advisory council of various other journals.

Chairman of the Finance & Sponsorship Committee

Professor Karl-Heinz Rahn is Professor Emeritus of the University of Münster Medical School, having been a long-time Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Münster Medical School. Before that, he held several professoral positions in Aachen and Mastricht. He also contributed to many scientific societies, most actively as President of the German Society of Hypertension (1991-1995), as President of the International Society of Hypertension (1998-2000), as President of the German Society of Internal Medicine (1999-2000) and as President of the German Society of Nephrology (2000-2001).


Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee

Professor Thomas Unger holds the Chair of Pharmacology and is Director of the Institute of Pharmacology at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. From 2001 until 2006 he was Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Campus Mitte of the Charité Berlin. He is also the Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research (CCR) at the Charité, Berlin and  the Chairman of the German Institute for High Blood Pressure Research in Heidelberg. Between 1994 and 2001, he was Director of the Institute of Pharmacology at the University of Kiel, Germany. Professor Unger studied medicine in Germany and the UK, and gained his MD from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He then carried out postdoctoral research at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal, Canada, and the Department of Pharmacology in Heidelberg, where he received his PhD in Pharmacology.
