Established in 1966, the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) is committed to promoting and encouraging the advancement of scientific research and knowledge and its application to the prevention and management of heart disease and stroke in hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases around the world.
The Society is proud to have an active membership of over 700 from more than 60 countries and includes physicians, academic and research leaders in basic biological science, clinicians ranging from senior professors to more junior research fellows working in clinical research and population studies based in the field of research on high blood pressure. Applications to become an ISH member are welcomed from those who have carried out research in the field of hypertension or related topics.
Key benefits of membership include monthly receipt of The Journal of Hypertension, the official Journal of the ISH and the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) reduced rates for registration at the Biennial Scientific Meetings, as well as regular news and updates via the Society’s electronic newsletter (Hypertension News) and website, www.ish-world.com, with access to the members only pages. Members joining from resource poor countries, zones and territories, as listed by the Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) Programme, are eligible to free online access of the Journal of Hypertension.
The main activities of the Society include the organisation of the Biennial Scientific Meetings attended by up to 8,000 participants and the development and publication of recommendations in conjunction with the World Health Organization and with special focus on Low and Middle Income Countries on management and prevention of hypertension and associated diseases. In recent years, the Society has also developed a visiting faculty programme to economically disadvantaged countries in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, in order to engage with individuals with academic cardiovascular interests, and to explore ways to encourage their work, and strengthen their links with ISH as well as the global scientific network.
An "International ISH Forum" is held during the Biennial Scientific Meeting in order to provide opportunities for the Presidents of National Hypertension Societies and High Blood Pressure Research Councils around the world to meet with the Society and discuss scientific, economic and ethical aspects of cardiovascular care. The Society also works with its closely affiliated educational arm, the World Hypertension League (WHL).
